Sertraline (Generic Zoloft)

Sertraline, the active ingredient in Zoloft, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that helps increase serotonin levels in the brain. Although Sertraline was not originally developed as a treatment for premature ejaculation (PE), studies have shown that it can extend the ejaculatory latency (mean time to ejaculate) in men with this sexual dysfunction. Since serotonin is involved in the brain’s process of processing sexual arousal, SSRIs like Sertraline can help control premature ejaculation at critical times.

*SSRIs, including Sertraline, have been approved by the FDA for the treatment of depression, anxiety, and certain other mood disorders. Treatment for premature ejaculation is Sertraline’s “off-label” use.

About Sertraline (Zoloft)

Sertraline, the active ingredient in Zoloft, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that helps increase serotonin levels in the brain and was first introduced to the market by Pfizer as an antidepressant drug. It is one of the most widely used antidepressants in the world, with millions of users in the United States and many more in other countries.

Although Sertraline was not originally developed as a treatment for premature ejaculation (PE), studies have shown that it can extend the ejaculatory latency (mean ejaculation time) in men with this sexual dysfunction. Since serotonin is involved in the brain’s process of processing sexual arousal, SSRIs like Sertraline can help control premature ejaculation at critical times. In fact, it is one of the most commonly used drugs for the treatment of premature ejaculation on the market today.

How to take sertraline?

Sertraline treats PE in two ways. You can take it daily at a convenient time (such as after brushing your teeth in the morning) or 4-8 hours before you plan to have sex. It is usually more effective to take it daily. However, some people may prefer to take the drug only when they plan to have sex, rather than taking it daily. For example, someone who has sex only once or twice a month may not want to take medication every day. Some people may also not like the idea of taking medication every day.

A high-fat meal may delay how quickly the drug begins to work. Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice on the same day you take sildenafil because it increases the chance of side effects.

The dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Typically our doctors or nurse practitioners prescribe the 50mg as a starting dose

FAQs

Sertraline is an antidepressant. You might have heard of it before as Zoloft®, the original brand name used by Pfizer to market this medication.

Sertraline belongs to a class of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. It’s one of the most widely used antidepressants in the world, with millions of users in the United States and many more in other countries.

Although it was originally developed as an antidepressant, sertraline is used to treat a variety of medical conditions. In fact, it’s one of the most widely used premature ejaculation pills on the market today.

Studies have found that Sertraline has been surprisingly effective in treating premature ejaculation. Studies have shown that it prolongs the ejaculation time (IELT) during sexual intercourse. For example, in one clinical trial, men with premature ejaculation were treated with oral Sertraline tablets. With a 25 mg dose, the average ejaculation interval increased from one minute to 7.6 minutes, while with the 100 mg dose, the average ejaculation interval was extended to 16.4 minutes. Side effects were fewer, with less than 10 percent of participants experiencing problems such as indigestion, anxiety, lethargy and loss of libido. Other studies have also demonstrated improvements in ejaculation timing and sexual function. Overall, the use of Sertraline to treat premature ejaculation can prolong sexual activity and increase satisfaction in both men and their partners.

Sertraline can be used to treat premature ejaculation in two different ways. The first way to use sertraline is as a daily-use medication, meaning you’ll take a dose of sertraline every day, even if you don’t always expect to have sex on that day. The second is as an as-needed medication for premature ejaculation. In this case, you’ll take a sertraline tablet only on the days when you plan to have sex. There’s no “ideal” way to use sertraline for PE for everyone. The most effective approach is to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and take your prescribed sertraline dosage either as needed or on a daily basis. Although sertraline is effective, results aren’t always immediate. It may take several weeks for sertraline to become completely effective as a treatment for PE. In the studies above, most of the men experienced the largest improvements after using sertraline for four weeks.

Sertraline is generally considered safe and effective in premature ejaculation treatment. However, it is a drug, and like other drugs, Sertraline has its own list of potential side effects.

After starting to take Sertraline, you may start noticing some nausea, drowsiness, headaches, and other problems.

Most side effects of Sertraline lessen over time, which means don't panic if you experience an adverse reaction during the first week of treatment. Continue to use Sertraline normally and inform your healthcare provider if side effects persist.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends avoiding alcohol altogether while using Sertraline. The effects of alcohol on brain neurotransmitters may reduce the effectiveness of Sertraline. Alcohol consumption is also associated with higher rates of side effects with SSRIs, such as Sertraline.

Sertraline should not be used with other drugs that increase the level of serotonin, including other antidepressants. It is especially important not to use Sertraline with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), a class of older antidepressants with interaction problems.

MAOIs may cause interactions within a few weeks of discontinuation. Make sure to let your healthcare provider know about any MAOIs or other antidepressants you have recently used or are currently using, including medications used within the last two weeks.

Other drugs that may interact with Sertraline include thioridazine, pimozide (pimozide), linezolid (linezolid), and methylene blue. To ensure safety, inform your healthcare provider of any medications and supplements you use before using Sertraline.

While sertraline is safe, convenient and highly effective, it’s not the only treatment option available for premature ejaculation.

If you’re experiencing some of sertraline’s adverse effects — like changes in your sex drive, general sexual desire or level of overall sexual stimulation — there are other things to consider.

Other options for treating PE include topical sprays, behavioral therapy, sexual techniques and even medications like sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra®).
